Is Spiritual Direction for Me?
How Do I Know if I Need a Spiritual Director?
There are seasons in life when everything seems to flow naturally. Prayer comes easily. Decisions feel clear. We sense God's presence in ordinary moments, and our faith feels rooted.
Then there are other seasons.
Perhaps prayer has become quiet, even dry. You long for a deeper relationship with God but aren't sure where to begin. Maybe you're carrying grief, navigating a major life transition, discerning an important decision, or sensing a gentle invitation from God that you cannot yet name.
If you've found yourself wondering, "Is there someone who could help me listen more deeply?" you may be asking a question that has led many people to spiritual direction.
Spiritual Direction Is Not About Having the "Right" Answers
One of the most common misconceptions is that spiritual direction is reserved for people facing a crisis or those who consider themselves especially spiritual.
Neither is true.
Spiritual direction is simply a sacred conversation with a spiritual director centered on your questions, concerns and needs.
Where is God present and active in your life today?
A spiritual director does not tell you what to do or make decisions for you. Instead, they accompany you as you learn to recognize God's loving presence, notice the movements of the Holy Spirit, and respond with greater freedom and trust.
It is less about receiving advice and more about learning to listen.
Here are some reasons people have sought spiritual direction with me:
Desiring a deeper relationship with God.
Feeling spiritually stuck or disconnected.
Longing for prayer to become more meaningful.
Facing a significant life change or decision.
Carrying grief, loss, or unanswered questions.
Wondering how God may be inviting them to grow.
Seeking a quiet, compassionate space where they can speak honestly without judgment.
Many people come simply because they sense there is something more in their spiritual life, even if they cannot yet put it into words.
God Meets Us in Every Season
The image of a flower blooming in its own time reminds us that spiritual growth cannot be rushed.
We often compare our journey to someone else's, wondering why our faith feels different or why answers seem slow to come. Yet throughout Scripture, God works patiently, often in hidden ways. Seeds germinate beneath the soil long before blossoms appear.
The same is true of our spiritual lives.
There are seasons of waiting, seasons of pruning, seasons of growth, and seasons of abundant joy. Each has its purpose.
Spiritual direction offers a place to honor the season you are in rather than wishing you were somewhere else.
You Don't Have to Walk Alone
Many of us have learned to navigate life independently. We seek answers through books, podcasts, Bible studies, or quiet prayer—all valuable gifts. Yet even throughout biblical history, God often worked through relationships.
Jesus walked with His disciples. Paul mentored Timothy. Elizabeth encouraged Mary. The early desert mothers and fathers sought companions who helped them discern God's voice.
Spiritual direction continues this ancient practice of holy companionship.
It is not about dependency. It is about having someone who listens with you for the gentle movements of God's grace.
An Invitation to Listen
Sometimes the first sign that you may benefit from spiritual direction is not a problem to solve but a quiet invitation.
A longing.
A restlessness.
A desire to know God more intimately.
You do not need to have everything figured out before beginning. You do not need the "right" questions or polished prayers.
You only need a willingness to come as you are.
Because just as every flower blooms in its own time, each soul unfolds according to God's loving rhythm. There is no timetable for grace, no race toward holiness, and no comparison in God's kingdom.
There is only the next faithful step.
Perhaps this is yours.
If you sense God inviting you to a deeper relationship or are wondering whether spiritual direction is right for you, I invite you to reach out. I'd be honored to listen to your story and explore whether this sacred practice is a good fit for your journey.
